What is ARBD?
Alcohol-Related Brain Damage (ARBD) is a condition caused by long-term excessive alcohol consumption. It occurs when alcohol damages nerve cells, reduces vitamin B1 (thiamine) levels, and leads to structural brain changes. Unlike other forms of dementia, ARBD may be stabilised or even improved with proper treatment, such as alcohol abstinence, a balanced diet, and vitamin supplementation.
There are different types of ARBD, including:
Alcohol-Related Dementia – Causes memory loss, difficulty with problem-solving, and personality changes.
Wernicke–Korsakoff Syndrome – A severe form caused by thiamine deficiency, leading to confusion, memory loss, and difficulty learning new information.
Other ARBD Types – Some individuals may experience balance issues, mood swings, and disorientation.
